How to generate ECR and the use of new version 4.0 of E-Return Tool
EPFO has simplified the Return and Challan preparation and submission. From April- 2012, Establishments need not submit the Returns like Form-5,Form10, Form-12A, Form-3A and Form-6A. Instead they have to use the online facility to upload a single Return viz. Electronic Challan cum Return (ECR) at the site http://esewa.epfoservices.in After Upload of ECR, Challan can be printed and due amount should be remitted using this challan at State Bank of India Branch before the due date which remains unchanged. .
Since the Launch of ECR:
No need to submit returns like Form 5/10/12A,3A and 6A.
Form-2 return remains unchanged
How to generate the ECR File for upload
ECR file is a Text file which can be created using a text editor like ‘Notepad’. The details of the columns of this file is explained in www.epfindia.gov.in/ECR/ECR_ForEmployers_FileStructure.pdf
When created the file contents will be like this:

If You have not used the ‘E-Return Tool’ at all, you may install the complete software by downloading b,c,d,e,f from EPFO head office site to a Single/Same directory/folder
- If you are already using E-Return Tool version less than 4.0, you may upgrade it as follows:
- Save your existing App_code folder as backup ( C Drive>>Program Files>>EPFO>>Ereturn setup>>Apps_code )
- Uninstall the version 3.0. For this, go to Control Panel>>Programs and Features and select e-return setup.
- Download e.setup.exe and f.eReturn_Setup.msi into a single folder from the epfindia website.
- Double click the setup.exe of the version 4.0 that has been downloaded e. The software will be installed.
- Again go to C Drive>>Program Files>>EPFO>>Ereturn setup. Paste the Apps_code folder which is backed up earlier.
